Job Summary:
The
Teacher-Specialist/Learning and Other
Disabilities
will be responsible for providing
legally mandated and professionally
appropriate supportive educational
services to students with disabilities.
As a member of a committed team of
faculty and support staff, the
Teacher-Specialist/Learning & Other
Disabilities provides expertise in the
assessments of, and accommodations for,
a variety of learning and other
disability conditions, and consultation
to the College on matters of
accessibility and learning styles and
strategies.
Job
Description:
The
Teacher-Specialist/Learning and Other
Disabilities will perform
all or some of the following Job
description:
Evaluate information from medical,
psychological, rehabilitation, and
educational sources to determine
program eligibility
If
indicated, provide assessment
services to determine eligibility as
a student with a learning disability
in accordance of the Learning
Disabilities Model of the State
Community College Chancellor’s
Office
Interpret information from multiple
sources to determine students’
profiles of learning and performance
strengths/limitations and to
translate them into recommended
career goals, learning strategies,
assistive technologies, academic
accommodations, test accommodations
and other disability support
services
Collaborate with students in the
development of their Student
Educational Contracts (SEC) which
delineates the services to be
offered and responsibilities of
students
Assist students in understanding
their cognitive strengths and
limitations, and how they impact
their learning styles
Assist in the development of
appropriate learning strategies
Provide academic, career, and
disability-related support services,
including intake interviews,
orientations, registration
advisement, monitoring of academic
progress, mentoring, etc.
Serve
as a resource professional to DSP&S
staff by providing information on
students’ strengths/limitations,
learning strategies, and academic
accommodations
Serve
as a resource professional to
faculty, staff, and administrators
on disability-related learning and
basic skills issues, and as liaison
with educational and community-based
organizations to facilitate the
transition of students into and out
of college
Maintain confidential student
records and the timely documentation
of services rendered
Develop and coordinate a
pre-professional traineeship for
graduate students in psychology and
special education to acquire skills
in psycho-educational assessment and
educational strategies to expand the
delivery of services to students
with disabilities
Supervise appropriate Classified
Staff according to College standards
Perform other duties and assume
other responsibilities as assigned
by the Assistant Dean of Special
Services.

Understanding the effects of
disabilities on social, behavior,
physical, perceptual, cognitive, and
psychological functioning
Understanding of educational
limitations and reasonable
accommodates in higher education
Familiarity with assistive
technologies designed to remove or
minimize the effects of barriers to
equal access in higher education
Knowledge of the methods and
techniques of psycho-educational
assessments to determine the
students’ strengths/limitations,
learning strategies, and academic
accommodations
Ability to effectively communicate
the educational needs of students
with disabilities to faculty and
staff that are unfamiliar with
disability issues in higher
education
Working knowledge of disability laws
and current trends in higher
education for students with
disabilities
Excellent written and verbal skills,
team player, proficiency in the use
of basic office equipment and
computer software, detail and
service-oriented, ability to
multi-task, flexibility, strong
organizational and planning skills,
and ability to handle heavy
workloads under pressure and within
deadlines
Social skills that promote a healthy
and effective interpersonal work
environment
Demonstrated sensitivity to and
understanding of the diverse
academic, socioeconomic, cultural
disability, and ethnic backgrounds
of community college students
Knowledge of assistive technologies
to facilitate access to educational
programs for students with
disabilities
Excellent knowledge of students with
intellectual disabilities, acquired
brain injuries, post-traumatic
stress disorder, autism spectrum
disorders and other developmentally
delayed conditions, and other
disabilities as they pertain to
higher education
Knowledge of, and experience in
consulting about, disability laws
and regulations, including the
Americans with Disabilities Act,
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Sections
504, 508), Title 5 of the California
Education Code, and others
Knowledge of and/or experience in
working with military veterans with
disabilities
Ability to work evenings and other
work schedules as needed.
Minimum Education Requirements /
Certification / Licensure For
Teacher-Specialist/Learning and Other
Disabilities
Job
Master’s degree in Rehabilitation
Counseling, or Special Education and
24 or more units in upper division
or graduate level coursework in
counseling, guidance, student
personnel, psychology, or social
work, or
Counseling, Guidance, Student
Personnel, Psychology, Career
Development, or Social Welfare, and
12 or more semester units in upper
division or graduate level
coursework specifically in
Counseling or Rehabilitation of
individuals with disabilities, or
two years of full-time experience,
or the equivalent, or
Learning Disabilities, Special
Education, Psychology, Educational
Psychology, or Rehabilitation
Counseling, and 15 semester units of
upper division or graduate study in
the area of learning disabilities,
or the equivalent
Successful completion of State
Community Colleges Chancellor’s
Office Learning Disabilities
Eligibility and Services Training or
be eligible for, and agree to
successfully complete, the training
within one year of the start of the
assignment at no cost to the
District.
