The Manager Medical Coding Services will be responsible for Managing, administering, and coordinating, as appropriate, the strategic, operational, and personnel activities of the Medical Coding Services Department, ensuring procedures are in compliance with relevant accrediting, regulatory, and other payer requirements.

The Manager Medical Coding Services will oversee the coding analysts’ (CAs’) coding, education, and support efforts in their assigned clinics, ensuring they acquire and maintain appropriate coding and related knowledge, and provide all clinics with consistent, accurate, timely, and high quality coding and related services.

He/She will prepare and manage budgets, manage/supervise staff and ensure quality services are provided through daily operations. The Manager Medical Coding Services will adhere to policies, procedures and regulations to ensure compliance and patient safety.

Job Description:

The Manager Medical Coding Services will perform all or some of the following Job description:

• The Manager Medical Coding Services will manage and coordinate the efforts of the department’s certified coders in supporting their assigned clinics, specialties, and providers

• He/She will maintain consistent communications with each clinic/department Practice Manager and CMD to ensure their needs are being met

• The Manager Medical Coding Services will perform scheduled and random visits of each clinic at least quarterly to observe each coder’s interactions and relationship with clinic provider’s and staff, and to provide coder’s any clinic-specific assistance that may be needed

• He/She will preside over the coders weekly team meeting, ensuring that the time is used productively for updating the coders on important, relevant information gathered since the last meeting, sharing best practices they’ve observed, resolving or creating plans to resolve coding issues and initiate accurate and consistent corrective action, ensuring all ongoing assignments (i.e. Etm and Tes edits) are being completed timely and accurately, and addressing other issues that may be impacting the coders ability to provide their clinics/providers with quality, value-added services

• The Manager Medical Coding Services will serve as the department’s liaison with other departments and on appropriate committees and work groups to help ensure that compliance/coding considerations are included and that the department is aware of situations and/or changes that may impact its operations

• Monitor and work closely with Revenue Operations to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and appropriate application of all edits built and operating via the Flowcast Ingenix coding scrubber software

• The Manager Medical Coding Services will determine and address the need for new edits to help ensure compliance while appropriately maximizing reimbursement

• He/She will prepare and monitor the department’s Operating & Capital budgets

• Address variances in a timely manner

• Mentor and coach coding staff to help ensure accomplishment of organizational, departmental, and personal goals

• The Manager Medical Coding Services will assist coders in enhancing their coding expertise by ensuring they have opportunities for further education and experience

• He/She will develop policies, processes, strategies and goals that support the department’s/ABQ HP’s direction.             

• The Manager Medical Coding Services should be able to meet patient and patient family needs; take responsibility for a patient’s safety, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes; use appropriate interpersonal techniques to resolve difficult patient situations and regain patient confidence
• He/She should be able to use economic, financial, market, and industry data to understand and improve clinic business results; uses one’s understanding of major business functions, industry trends, and the Company's position to contribute to effective business strategies and tactics
• The Manager Medical Coding Services should be able to plan and support the development of individuals’ skills and abilities so that they can fulfill current or future job/role responsibilities more effectively
• He/She should be able to establish courses of action for self and others to ensure that work is completed efficiently
• He/She should possess four (4) years of related experience of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory capacity
• The Manager Medical Coding Services should have the ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to direct and manage projects and/or programs
• Ability to prepare technical reports
• The Manager Medical Coding Services should possess advanced computer skills.
