Example 1: Industrial Engineer Job Description

Job Summary:

The Industrial Engineer will apply Industrial Engineering concepts, techniques, analysis and decision tools under general supervision to promote and implement changes in manufacturing, engineering and service operations.

Job Description: 

The Industrial Engineer will perform all or some of the following job description:

  • Assist in developing models, data bases and spreadsheets to analyze data (e.g., statistics, operations research, engineering economics), and provide summary analysis and metrics for consultation to customers (e.g., management, departments, suppliers)

  • He/She will apply basic industrial engineering techniques and concepts to product and process design teams throughout all phases of product lifecycle, resulting in a robust product design and work statement that meets program requirements

  • The Industrial Engineer will research, design, develop, improve, and implement processes as directed to enhance schedule performance, lower cost, and improve quality, through the application of Lean and other Industrial Engineering concepts for large scale systems integration and asset utilization

  • He/She will utilize engineering methods (e.g., mathematical models, simulation, statistics) to assist in developing optimal process designs and efficient utilization of resources (e.g., facilities, personnel, materials, equipment) in the creation and validation of products

  • Analyze and support the design of the value stream, including capability, capacity (e.g., make/buy, supplier selection, risk analysis, supplier performance), throughput, work flow and logistics (e.g., critical path, lead-time, transportation, factory layout)

  • Under general supervision, the Industrial Engineer will manage, define, negotiate, and control the scope, cost, and timing of projects, and perform risk analysis using project management tools (e.g., work break-down structure, precedence network, resource allocation)

  • He/She will provide support to project completion.

Minimum Requirements / Knowledge / Skill For Industrial Engineer Job

  • The Industrial Engineer should be able to understand changes in work-group tasks, situations, and the department as well as the logic or basis for change

  • He/She should understand customers and their needs and consider such factors in the completion of day-to-day job tasks and responsibilities

  • He/She should possess skill and ability to: collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources

  • The Industrial Engineer should possess basic knowledge of responsibilities and tasks performed by various Engineering departments/disciplines (e.g., design, test, software, technology, avionics)

  • He/She should possess basic knowledge of the interaction between departments/ disciplines and how their products/processes affect one another and impact non-engineering processes (e.g., Operations, Logistics, Business).

  • Possess basic knowledge of lean manufacturing principles (e.g., value stream analysis, single piece flow)

  • The Industrial Engineer should possess basic knowledge of the responsibilities and tasks performed by Operations departments and/or disciplines

  • He/She should have basic ability to create simple project schedules which identify time frames for key project milestones, update more complex project schedules developed by others, independently identify project resource requirements, and seek assistance or recommendations from others

  • He/She should possess basic knowledge of IE principles to create workplace designs that meet program requirements.

Minimum Education Requirements / Certification / Licensure For Industrial Engineer Job

Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard. 

Example 2: Industrial Engineer - Manufacturing Job Description

Job Summary:

The Industrial Engineer - Manufacturing will aid in the development, design, and implementation of automated manufacturing lines /systems.

Job Description:

The Industrial Engineer - Manufacturing will perform all or some of the following Job description:

  • He/She will develop assembly processes

  • Design/develop automated equipment and processes layouts

  • Design/develop fixtures & tooling for a variety of assembly tasks for manufacturing

  • The Industrial Engineer will implement industrial automation, new product launches, and lean manufacturing concepts

  • He/She will also evaluate the manufacturability of products, develop appropriate assembly processes, and plan appropriate tools/fixtures/gauges to achieve assembly cost targets.

Minimum Requirements / Knowledge / Skill For Industrial Engineer - Manufacturing Job

  • 5 years' minimum experience required, (5-10 years preferred) in Industrial Engineering specifically around automated manufacturing line layout, design, and management (process mapping, time & motion study, layout, people/material/equipment flow, and efficiency analysis)

  • Experience in the application of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma tools and methods

  • Hands on experience in a manufacturing environment a plus

  • The Industrial Engineer should have experience with MS Visio 2d CAD software

  • Experience with 3d Create simulation software a plus

  • He/She should have strong project management and organizational skills

  • He/She should de demonstrate ability to work across cultures

  • Strong motivational and leadership qualities demonstrated in a product creation/manufacturing environment

  • The Industrial Engineer should be proficient problem solver with an innate ability to deal with ambiguity

  • Possess the ability to lead multiple complex projects at one time and prioritize work according to potential impact

  • Effective project and resource management experience with a proactive approach to team specific issues

  • Ability to travel 10-15% of the time.

Minimum Education Requirements / Certification / Licensure For Industrial Engineer - Manufacturing Job

  • Bachelors or Master degree in Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
