Job Summary:

The Computer Science Student Assistant III is responsible for assisting technical staff with the installation, maintenance, administration, troubleshooting and enhancement of experimental computing systems, operating systems and middleware and related technology research and development (e.g., Grid Computing and Cloud Computing). 

• Assist NCAR system administrators with maintenance of the Coordinated TeraGrid Software Stack (CTSS) components on NCAR’s Blue Gene/L supercomputer and other resources

• Work with NCAR staff and collaborators to develop Grid-based and cloud-based software services and tools to support existing and emerging NCAR workflows

• Perform system administration, configuration and monitoring of experimental supercomputer systems (as necessary to support above duties)

• Troubleshoot and make recommendations to resolve system issues

• Monitor system performance and gather systems statistics for recommendations

• Run diagnostics to isolate problems

• Contribute to collaborative thinking with staff members to research and develop new methods to enhance system performance, utilization, and interoperability

• Prepare requirements analysis, design documents, user documentation and other documents.

• Two years of UNIX system administration experience
• Two years of software development experience
• Broad knowledge of processor and system architectures
• Ability to configure high-performance Linux clusters
• Demonstrated proficiency with Unix-based operating systems, including Linux, and with common Unix shells
• Skill in ANSI C programming
• Demonstrated skill developing scripts using Perl, Python, or other scripting languages
• Demonstrated skill in working effectively in a team setting
• Good oral and written communication skills.
