Example 1: Computer Technician Job Description

Job Summary:

The Computer Technician will provide support to end users within the organization’s desktop computing environment. He/She will install, diagnose, repair, maintain, and upgrade all PC hardware and equipment to ensure optimal workstation performance.

The Computer Technician will troubleshoot problem areas (in person, by telephone, or via e-mail) in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end-user assistance where required.

Job Description:

The Computer Technician will perform all or some of the following Job description:

  • Install, diagnose, repair, and maintain information technology infrastructure including but not limited to workstations, servers, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, VOIP, video conferencing, tape backup systems, and networking equipment

  • Provide quality hardware and software support for all end users

  • Efficiently troubleshoot and resolve incidents using the incident management system

  • The Computer Technician will connect workstations and terminals to existing data networks

  • Maintain workstations and servers using client management tools

  • Identify and learn appropriate software applications relevant to the organization

  • The Computer Technician will communicate application problems and issues to key stakeholders, including management, development teams, end users, and unit leaders

  • Analyze business needs and recommend technology based solutions

  • Work with hardware and software vendors to install updates on enterprise workstations

  • Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex desktop problems for end-users

  • The Computer Technician will ensure efficient operation of the organization’s computing environment

  • Use diagnostic utilities to aid in troubleshooting

  • Research software updates, drivers, knowledge bases, and other resources to assist in troubleshooting

  • Provide “on call” services, and respond to incidents in a timely fashion

  • The Computer Technician will perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements / Knowledge / Skill For Computer Technician Job

  • The Computer Technician must possess a moderate understanding of general job aspects and some understanding of the detailed aspects of the job

  • He/She must possess communication skills, time management skills, organizational skills, interpersonal skills, writing skills, and computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Lotus Notes

  • He/She must be able to maintain frequent contact with individuals representing other departments and/or outside organizations. Contacts involve obtaining or providing information or data on matters of moderate importance to the function of the department or which may be of sensitive nature

  • The Computer Technician must have the ability to read and interpret complex business and/or technical documents

  • Ability to write comprehensive reports and detailed business correspondence

  • Ability to work with groups of people such as other departments and communicate known concepts

  • The Computer Technician should have the ability to present to a group of departments

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

  • The Computer Technician must be able to solve problems with a variety of concrete variable through semi-standardized solutions that require some ingenuity and analysis

  • He/She should be able to draw inferences and follow prescribed and detailed procedures to solve moderately complex problems

  • He/She should be able to routinely sit, walk, stand, stoop, and kneel

  • The Computer Technician should be able to perform intermittent moderate lifting.

Minimum Educational Requirements / Certification / Licensure For Computer Technician Job

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and 0-2 years of experience required

  • Minimum of three years of experience and advanced certification is preferred. However, a combination of experience and/or education will be taken into consideration.

Example 2: Computer Operator Job Description

Job Summary:

The Computer Operator will be responsible for monitoring applications, hardware, and network on all operating platforms located in the Corporate Data Center to analyze potential problems and take corrective action. In addition, he/she will record, communicate, and resolve all operational problems and system status daily.

The Computer Operator will also provide training to part time operators and update procedures and documentation.

Job Description:

The Computer Operator will perform all or some of the following Job description:

  • The Computer Operator will be responsible for operating computer, computer-related hardware and other operations area equipment

  • He/She will perform support activities in computer operations

  • The Computer Operator will assist in training new computer operators; monitor and control a computer console to process and complete jobs

  • Operate Xerox printers to complete the printing of assigned files; gain knowledge of the continuous printing process in an effort to serve as a back-up when needed

  • He/She will process assigned customer files, notify the customer that the files have been processed and accounts are in balance, and assign the print-ready files to their assigned printers; re-process and verify damaged accounts returned for re-printing and transition the accounts to the next processing stage

  • The Computer Operator will document and list all files received and processed and verify that the correct file has been accessed

  • He/She will adhere to the controls implemented to ensure accurate processing; investigate error conditions in computer processing, equipment malfunction and/or network (on-line) performance in order to determine and/or apply the required corrective procedure or action

  • He/She will maintain the physical inventory of computer operations supplies in a designated storage area and keep the various operations areas stocked with the supplies necessary for daily production

  • The Computer Operator will set up, prepare, operate and perform preventive maintenance tasks on tape drives, computer on-line microfiche, disk units, printers, bursters, decollators, inserters, postage meters, microfiche viewers, and similar devices

  • The Computer Operator will control and monitor the on-line network from the central network control center

  • He/She will perform any other duty as assigned.

Minimum Requirements / Knowledge / Skill For Computer Operator Job

  • Working knowledge of computer operating systems specifically MPE, UNIX, Windows, LINUX

  • Must have a Minimum of one to three years related experience or training on operations of computer related equipment

  • The Computer Operator must be able to Multitask, Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variable situations where limited standardization exist

  • He/She must have good typing Skills.

Minimum Educational Requirements / Certification / Licensure For Computer Operator Job

  • High School graduate with sufficient education, training, and or work experience to demonstrate possession of Skills, knowledge and abilities typically acquired through an Associate Degree education Program in electronic data processing, programming , and or administrative management.
