IT Specialist - Operating Systems Job Description

 

 

 

Job Summary:

The IT Specialist - Operating Systems will be responsible for defining and developing projects, and acquiring the resources to complete them. In this position, he/she  will develop guidelines that will be used by other specialists; lead major national level projects such as the application and adaptation of new and improved approaches to the planning, installation, configuration, testing, implementation, and management of the systems environment; and the diagnosis and resolution of the most complex operating systems problems and issues. 

Job Description:

The IT Specialist - Operating Systems will perform all or some of the following Job description:

  • Lead a significant local project to ensure high reliability and optimal availability of applications

  • Develop solutions to complex operational problems; and evaluate the feasibility of implementing new technologies with current environments

  • Lead the local implementation of a national project to install, configure, test, and implement vendor supplied modifications to existing systems software

  • Develop and evaluate test data to validate program modifications; and migrate modifications into production systems

  • Monitor systems performance data for the entire local network; and make appropriate systems tuning adjustments to optimize performance and correct and prevent problems

  • Consult with applications developers on a significant local project to determine the effect on end user applications resulting from changes to the operating environment; e.g., new software or hardware installations

  • Determine and properly configure, for the entire local network, systems components such as disk drives, printers, and other peripherals needed to support the operating environment

  • Lead a significant local project to plan and coordinate the installation, upgrade, and maintenance of the operating environment, including: compilers; utilities; communications systems; systems management products; third-party systems software; security packages; scheduling systems; and applications software packages; and evaluate, select, and coordinate the acquisition of appropriate systems software packages and hardware. 

Minimum Requirements / Knowledge / Skill For IT Specialist - Operating Systems Job

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the grade 11 that demonstrated accomplishment of computer project assignments that required a wide range of knowledge of computer requirements and techniques pertinent to the position to be filled. This knowledge is generally demonstrated through assignments that required the ability to analyze a number of alternative approaches in the process of advising management concerning major aspects of ADP system design. This would include defining what system interrelationships must be considered, or what operating mode, system software, and/or equipment configuration is most appropriate for a given project
  • Demonstrated ability to: Plan and coordinate change activities with applications developers, telecommunications specialist, facilities managers, vendors and customers; manage implementation and deployment and keep senior management informed of project progress through periodic briefings and reports.

Minimum Education Requirements / Certification / Licensure For IT Specialist - Operating Systems Job

  •  Bachelor's degree.
